After a few years of silence, Detroit post-hardcore five-piece Marcus: the Apex Predator! roars back to life on "Newborn Fossil", a raucous and scorching EP due out February 28, 2025. Founded in 2015 by Kevin Watts (guitar, vocals) and Nick Marko (drums), the band picks up where they left off with a matured sound that's still faithful to its foundation of unapologetic emotion, disjointed melody and chunky riffs.

With the opening chords, "Newborn Fossil" sets, Marcus: The Apex Predator! has lost no venom. Tracks like "The First Summer" and "Plenty & Shine" blend searing guitar riffs and shifting rhythms with Watts' characteristic lyrical introspection. Melody and ferocity are worked into opposition with each other by the band and fed with chaos into something great and surprisingly catchy.

The addition of Sean Bondareff (Kind Beast) on bass brings a new dynamic to the trio, giving the songs added depth and drive. Recorded by Jake Shives and mastered by Grammy-winning producer Dave Feeny at Tempermill Studios, the EP sounds polished without sacrificing the band’s trademark grit.

There's a sense of urgency pulsing through the EP, likely a result of the band’s hiatus and the tumultuous years leading up to this release. Rather than sounding tentative, "Newborn Fossil" is a confident, cathartic outburst that reminds listeners why Marcus :The Apex Predator! made waves in the first place.

Critics are already taking notice, with praise from Alt77.com and MysticSons.com, and it’s easy to see why. Newborn Fossil is a triumphant return, loud, layered and emotionally resonant. Marcus: The Apex Predator! has proven that time away hasn’t dulled their edge; it’s only sharpened their aim. Click on the Link above for a quick stream.
